Grasshopper Base Course

For architects and engineers

Two intensive days to learn parametric logic and Grasshopper from scratch: from the interface to data trees, up to real parametric facades, surfaces and structures.

Program

Day 1 — morning

Fundamentals
  • Introduction to parametric logic: differences from traditional modeling
  • The Grasshopper interface: canvas, components, connections and panels
  • Core concepts: parameters, data and information flow
  • First components: points, vectors, planes and curves
  • Creating patterns and series (range, series, sequence)
  • Hands-on exercise: building a parametric facade with variable elements
  • Hands-on exercise: defining a reinforced-concrete section

Day 1 — afternoon

Data & geometry
  • Data list management: tree structures (data trees) and indexing
  • Fundamental geometric operations
  • Attractors: controlling dimensions and transformations based on distance
  • Hands-on exercise: surface tessellation with attractor points

Day 2 — morning

Complex surfaces
  • Surfaces and complex geometry
  • Domains and reparameterization
  • Clusters and script organization
  • Hands-on exercise: arch bridge modeling

Day 2 — afternoon

Conditionals & interoperability
  • Introduction to conditional components (if, cull, dispatch)
  • Grasshopper–Rhino interoperability: bake and referencing
  • Overview of the most-used plug-ins (Kangaroo, Weaverbird, LunchBox, Karamba3D)
  • Final exercise: designing a “waffle structure” or reticular roof
  • Wrap-up and discussion
What you'll be able to do
  • Build parametric definitions independently
  • Manage data lists and tree structures
  • Apply attractor logic to vary elements based on spatial conditions
  • Model complex surfaces
  • Organize definitions with clusters
  • Export models to Rhino for design development and technical drawings
  • Find your way around the main plug-ins (Kangaroo for physics and form-finding, Weaverbird for meshes, LunchBox for patterns and structures)
